[...] The third podcast I chose is Photography History Summer School, by Bill Jay. Every week he features one or two photographers to discuss their work and their contribution to photography. This is a short podcast, 4-5 minutes, so it could be implemented into classroom and not take up a lot of time. I would use this to familiarize the students with language used in discussing art and photography, at the same time, opening a dialog on a particular area the photographer was from, what was happening during that time period, and the influences this may have made on his/her work. History and art have affected each other greatly through time; it is important for students to see the influences. http://photohistory.jeffcurto.com/archives/82 [...]

Glad you found at least a bit of "explanation" there... As I sometimes say... I don't invent the history... I just report on where it got us to.

Thanks!

I'll be honest, with the first few examples of concept art I was thoroughly unimpressed--as you mentioned I might be. So much so, I ranted about it on my blog at http://bloritsch.d-haven.net. Then when I forced myself to finish, there were actually some very compelling images later.

I have a bias against left-brained "art", which was the 20th century offering in the music world (from my music history class at Full Sail Real World Education). However, there were several examples of visually interesting concept art introduced later on the topic. Well worth the listen.

Rex; thanks for posting. Yes; I think at first Saudek looks "romantic" and I suppose in some ways, he is, but what's really interesting is that sardonic attitude that seems to completely counteract that romantic look and feel that the images have.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for posting this episode. I have always been a fan of Eastern European photographers. They seem to put a different slant on things. I hadn't come across either of these before. I like them both, particularly Saudek. Some of his images seem to be a bit cynical, particularly "Image of a great man".
